Abstract: Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are certain algebraic varieties whose definition has a strong Lie theory flavor. They play an important role in the study of Shimura varieties, which is one of the central topics in the Langlands Program. On the other hand, (twisted) orbital integrals on a Lie group are natural objects in harmonic analysis, which also appear in the Langlands Program. We will discuss a recent method of using twisted orbital integrals to study the geometry of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The talk is based on a paper joint with Rong Zhou.
